With Raymond's twenty years as a luthier and Ashley's deep understanding of the Sonoran Desert, we are confident in our knowledge. Our desert ironwood products are sustainably sourced from private lands, including our property. We gather materials from dead trees that are not nurse trees for saguaros and clearly show signs of not sheltering wildlife.
Derrio Wood Company is dedicated to the preservation of desert ironwood. Although it’s not listed as a protected species by CITES, it faces threats from urban development, groundwater depletion, drought, cattle grazing, and overharvesting in Mexico. Our products are ethically and sustainably sourced from fallen trees, some of which have remained untouched for decades or even centuries. The preservation of desert ironwood remains intact for remarkable lengths of time due to its high density, somewhat toxic characteristics, and slow growth, allowing it to endure the extreme summer heat of the Sonoran Desert. Furthermore, this wood is non-biodegradable, and its heartwood is generally avoided by insects.
These desert ironwood ukulele sets have been stabilized with black CA due to inclusions in this old-growth wood. It's typical for desert ironwood sets to have inclusions; this is inherent to the material as a tree can die, then a new tree encompasses the dead trunk or branch, and the existing bark causes inclusions.
