"The Genesis Tree" gets its name from its impressive size, beauty, and rarity. The tree was long dead when it was discovered, likely for a couple of hundred years. Desert ironwoods decay very slowly, and their composition is somewhat toxic, making them resistant to typical wormholes and insect damage in the heartwood.

 

Desert ironwood is known for its unusual growth patterns, including large cracks, crevices, and voids. The most interesting characteristic of this species is its ability to die, then grow back and encapsulate the dead trunk or root, integrating the old sapwood into the heartwood of a new tree. This process produces the lighter (off-white and light yellowish) colors seen in certain specimens.

 

Obtaining workable acoustic back and side sets is challenging because the tree has many natural voids and cracks. It takes a specimen like "The Genesis Tree" to provide such gifts, and a skilled luthier/woodworker like Raymond Kraut to figure out a way to mill the log into billets that might work. Even then, the results are unpredictable.​
